Wheat Stitch Hat 2-in-1 beanie & messy bun

Measurements:

Teen-adult: use an H hook approximately measures: 8”x10” (laying flat) Child 6-12 years: use an H hook approximately measures: 7.5”x10 (laying flat)

Child, ages 3-5: use a G hook approximately measures: 7”x 9”

(laying flat)

Toddler, ages 1-2: use a G hook approximately measures: 6.5”x8”

(laying flat)

Gauge: 4dc= 1” (6 year old- Adult-) 5dc=1” (toddler-Child, 3-5 year old)

Materials:

3.5 oz of Medium (4) yarn (pattern includes 2-3 optional color changes) If you are working with a medium 4 weight yarn, but its on the lighter side such as pound of love or simply soft, use an I hook.

H hook for adult, G hook for Child

Elastic hair ties such as: “Scunci black no damage”

Abbreviations US TERMS:

ch= chain

st(s)= stitch(es)

yo= yarn over

sc= single crochet

bpsc= back post single crochet

dc= double crochet

fptc= front post treble crochet

slst= slip stitch

** = repeat instructions between asterisks as many times as directed or repeat from a given set of instructions

Special Stitches: Puff Stitch (PS): *yo, insert hook into st, yo, pull through* 3x, yo pull through first 6 loops, yo pull through last 2 loops Notes: Pattern includes color change suggestion if you're using 2-3 colors. This pattern includes a printer friendly version and one to follow with pictures.


For ALL messy bun styles:

1. 40 sc around hair tie (after pulling first st onto hair tie, ch 1 to anchor it in place) join (40)


2. ch 2 (does not count as first st) 2 dc in same stitch and in each stitch around, join to the top of beginning dc (80)

Skip the first 3 rounds of the regular beanie directions and continue at the 4th round

For ALL regular beanie styles:

1. create a magic circle, ch 3, 10 dc into magic circle, sl st to the top of the ch 3 to join

If you are not comfortable doing a magic circle, follow these instructions instead.

1. ch 3, 10 dc in 3rd ch from hook, sl st into the top of the ch 3.

2. ch 2, 4 dc in each st, join (40)

3. ch 2, 2 dc in each st, join (80)

Your work will look wonky at this point but it will straighten out nicely in the next few rounds. ROUND 4 is the most difficult! Be sure you are placing your stitches in the right places, see pictures. It’s much easier after this round.


For ALL sizes and styles:

4. ch 3, *Fptc in next 3 sts, ch 2, skip 2, sc, ch 2, skip 2, Fptc in next 3 sts, ch 2 (do not skip sts)* repeat around (ends in a ch 2) join to the top of beginning fptc (7-ch 2 spaces, 7-ch 2,sc,ch 2 spaces)

5. ch 3, *fptc in next 3 sts, skip over the “ch 2,sc,ch 2” space and fptc in the next 3 sts (these stitches will be around the posts of the previous fptc sts) ch 2, sc into ch space, ch 2* repeat around, ends in a ch 2, sc into the bottom on ch 3, 2 slst up ch 3, last slst the top of ch 3 for a join

6. ch 3, *fptc in next 6 sts, ch1, PS in first ch 2 space, ch1, PS in next ch 2 space, ch 1* repeat around (ends in a ch1) join to the top of beginning fptc (14 PS's)

7. ch 3, *fptc in next 6 sts, ch1, PS in between previous ps's, ch1, PS in same space, ch 1* repeat around, join to the top of beginning fptc

8. repeat Round 6

9. repeat Round 6 (At the end of this round you'll have 4 rounds with PS)


For Child (6-12) and Toddler Sizes:

Optional color change in round 10 for Duo color combo

10. ch3, *fptc in next 3 sts, ch 2,fptc in next 3, ch 2, sc in ch space between PS (you'll be skipping over ch spaces from previous round) ch 2* Repeat until the end (ends in a ch 2) join to the top of beginning fptc

For Adult and Child (3-5) sizes:

Optional color change in round 11 for Duo color combo

11. ch3, *fptc in next 3, ch 2, sc in ch space, ch 2, fptc in next 3 sts, ch 2 skip over “ch 2, sc,ch 2,” fptc in next 3 sts* repeat until the end (ends in a fptc) join to the top of beginning fptc

12. ch 3, fptc in next 3 sts, ch 1, PS in first ch space, ch 1, PS in next ch space, ch 1, *fptc in next 6 sts, ch 1, PS in first ch space, ch 1, PS in next ch space, ch 1* repeat until the end (ends in a fptc) join to the top of beginning fptc


For Child (6-12) and Toddler Sizes:

13. ch 3, fptc in next 3 sts, ch 1, PS in between previous PS's, ch 1, PS in same space, ch 1, *fptc in next 6 sts, ch 1, PS in between previous PS's, ch 1, PS in same space, ch 1* repeat until the end (ends in a fptc) join to the top of beginning fptc


For Adult and Child (3-5) sizes:

14. repeat round 13.

15. For Child 6-12 and Toddler sizes SKIP this round. For Adult and Child 3-5, repeat round 13 (At the end of this round you'll have 4 rounds with PS)


Brim This is a nice place to add a color change or don't :)

16. ch 1, (begin in same st) sc in next 3 sts, 4 sc in ch space in between PS's, *sc in next 6 sts, 4 sc in ch space in between PS's* repeat around until end, join to the top of beginning sc (72 sc)

17. ch 1, bpsc in each st around, join to the top of beginning sc (72 sc)

18. repeat round 17, tie off and sew in ends. (72 sc)
